Top 5 Reasons to Travel This Holiday Season

Top 5 Reasons to Travel This Holiday Season
By Rem Malloy

1. Prices will never be lower. Historically travel overall has never been the less expensive, many companies including airlines, hotels and tour operators have drastically lowered pricing to encourage travelers to take to the roads, seas and sky's. In the near future not only will prices go back to pre-recession levels but will likely increase to compensate for lost revenue over the last year.

2. Travel clears your head. No matter if you journey a few miles from home for a weekend getaway or travel 10,000 miles; travel gets you out of the daily grind and gives you a new perspective on your current situation. By going outside your bubble, it gives you the opportunity to look around and think a different way about the daily life. Getting away may give you a perspective on your life that you couldn't see before within the walls of your own home. If you're one of the many Americans who is unemployed or is struggling in this economy a simple road trip within 100 miles of your house to see something in nature, to visit a museum, to get out of the daily grind of worry is a great benefit to the ability to think your way out of a situation that you find yourself.

3. Experiences are more valuable than possessions. A study by Ryan Howell, assistant professor of psychology at San Francisco State University found that experiences make us happier than possessions. That's in part because the initial joy of acquiring a new object, such as a new car, fades over time as people become accustomed to seeing it every day. Experiences, on the other hand, continue to provide happiness through memories long after the event occurred. Giving the gift of travel this holiday season will reap rewards much longer than another pair of socks.

4. Reconnect with friends and family. Pricing for travel has never been so low so now is the time to reconnect with old college friends or family members you haven't seen in many years. This is a great opportunity to reach rekindle the bond of friendship and family through the amazing offers you can find for travel in the United States and abroad. During this holiday season hotels and resorts are offering complementary nights as well as dining perks during your visit. The back to back holidays of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and Quanza combined with overall industry savings makes a short holiday very reasonable.

5. Contribute to economic recovery. Stimulus, stimulus, stimulus; these are the words we hear every second on TV and read in every other page of our newspapers. The concept is simple, spend money and the economy will improve. The travel and hospitality industries are some of the hardest hit by the economic downturn. There is no better time to support your local economy by going for a trip, calling your local travel agent or booking a hotel for a romantic evening away from home. It is only by working together that we will all benefit from recovery.

The Writing of the News - A Book Review

The Writing of the News - A Book Review

The Writing of the News - A Book Review
By Lance Winslow

Today, the news isn't what it used to be and many of America's newspapers are closing down. You can pick up any of the newspapers in the country and a third of the content will be exactly the same, as fewer and fewer reporters have jobs, and more information is picked up from the AP as filler. It's hard to say in the future if there will even be newspapers, many have predicted their demise for a long time, and unfortunately, that potential eventuality is looking more and more real each day.

If topics about news writing concern you, if you find this a fascinating topic, or if you are a writer or reporter I'd like to recommend a very good book to you on this subject. The name of the book is;

"News Reporting and Writing" by the Missouri Group, and The School of Journalism; University of Missouri at Columbia, 1988.

In part one of this book, it talks about the philosophy and methods for accurate and fair reporting. It also explains the damage which can be done by biased reporting, or by reporters who have a hidden agenda. Indeed, I was pleased to see this series of chapters in part one that dealt with ethics in the news media, something I believe today is lacking, of course this book was written 20 years ago.

In part two of this book they talk about ways to gather information for writing and in the next part they explain the importance of good writing, and basic skills. It also talks about sources, protected sources, searching for the news, and complex stories. Part four, five and six of this book it is all about applying the techniques to create the news.

In part seven there are case studies which are very interesting. One interesting notation was that of 514 local stories only 11 of those appeared in other newspapers, and one has to ask why. There are many factors for this such as the impact on other areas, the proximity, the timeliness of other stories that were similar for their communities, the novelty of the story, and the amount of human conflict. It talked a lot about the secondary news cycles, where stories were given a fresh slant.

This is a very interesting book to read, and one that I have in my writing library. If you plan on writing about current events, current affairs, news, or even political events, I recommend that you own this book. Indeed, I hope you'll please consider this.

2012

"2012" - Is This the End of the World?

"2012" - Is This the End of the World?
By Marquis Van De Mark

The latest blockbuster by Roland Emmerich, "2012", is a lot of fun. This may seem like a strange statement to make regarding a movie showing the destruction of the world and the death of billions of people, but face it, no one can kill the planet like Roland Emmerich. But is there any truth to the movie?

It is true that the Mayan Calendar ends on December 21, 2012, when our sun aligns with the galactic equator, and for years there has been growing debate about exactly what this means. The range of opinions seem to fall into three camps:

The Destructionists - Some people believe that something bad is coming. Either the planet is going to wipe us out as shown in the movie, or we will wipe ourselves out in some huge and ongoing war. Some people even believe that this ultimate war has already started, a time bomb waiting to go off in 2012.

The Hopefuls - Then there are those who believe that 2012 is a good thing. They believe that we are moving into a time when humans will evolve and create a greener, happy, more utopian world for us all. In the meantime, it might be difficult as the old way of life fights to maintain control, but ultimately, 2012 is a great thing.

The Non-Believers - These folks think that 2012 is nothing. They joke that it's just when the Mayans ran out of room on their rock. They say that it's just like Y2K and will just turn out to be a whole lot of nothing. It's just another way for people to get worked up and spend money watching silly movies.

Whatever camp you fall in, there is no doubt we are living in interesting times. Changes in technology, the weather, and our own attitudes seem to be happening more rapidly than ever before, and how it will all turn out is anybody's guess. This writer is certainly hoping for the best. Regardless of how it all turns out, it is definitely a lot of fun watching Roland Emmerich destroy the planet.

What To Do with Turkey Leftovers

Thanksgiving Leftovers

Thanksgiving Turkey Leftovers - Two Recipes With a Bite

Thanksgiving Turkey Leftovers - Two Recipes With a Bite
By Barbara Wibault

Two Popular Leftover Turkey Recipes

We all wonder what in the world we are going to do with all that leftover turkey the day after Thanksgiving. Instead of just throwing it away there are a wide variety of recipes, you can create with the leftover turkey, which your family will enjoy. No, not just sandwiches for the next week. These recipes are healthy treats that will give your family something to rave about even after Thanksgiving.

One very popular leftover turkey recipe is Turkey Pie. The ingredients you will need include:

  • one thawed puff pastry (can use thawed pie crusts),

  • four cups of leftover turkey cubed,

  • one cube of chicken bouillon,

  • one cup of frozen sliced carrots,

  • eight ounces of sliced mushrooms,

  • one cup of frozen lima beans,

  • one half cup of onion chopped,

  • two tablespoons of butter or margarine,

  • one tablespoon of water,

  • one fourth cup of all purpose flour,

  • two and one half cups of milk,

  • one fourth cup of Parmesan cheese,

  • one egg white beaten,

  • salt and pepper.

Cook frozen lima beans and carrots in a saucepan until completely thawed, drain well, and set aside. Melt one tablespoon of butter over medium heat.

When melted add the mushrooms, cook until the mushrooms are brown. Take the mushrooms out of the melted with a slotted spoon and place in a large bowl.

Put another tablespoon of butter in the pan, once melted add two tablespoons of water. Now, add the onion and sauté until tender. In a small bowl, stir the milk and flour until the mixture is smooth. Now, all the flour mixture to the onions. Stir and then add the Parmesan cheese, bouillon, salt, and pepper. Once this mixture begins to boil and becomes thickened, add the rest of the ingredients, reserving a few pieces of turkey, and cook for a few minutes.

Roll out the pastry and place in the bottom of the casserole dish, put the mixture into the casserole dish, add the remaining turkey, cover with the rest of the pastry and pinch along the sides to hold together. Brush the rims with egg whites and bake for around forty minutes or until the pastry is browned.

Another yummy recipe that many love to create with their leftover turkey is Turkey a la King. This quick and easy recipe is sure to please.

You will need:

  • 2 1/2 cups of leftover turkey (bite size)

  • 1/4 cup of butter

  • 1/2 cup of chopped green pepper

  • 4 ounces of sliced mushrooms

  • 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 cups of milk

  • 1 can of condensed cream of mushroom soup

  • 2 ounces of chopped pimiento

  • Onion powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste.

First, melt the butter in a skillet; next add the green peppers and the mushrooms. Cook for around five minutes. Remove the vegetables using a slotted spoon and place aside. Now, add the all-purpose flour to the butter and stir until smooth.

Once smooth add the cream of mushroom soup and milk. Stir until smooth and thick. Now, all the rest of the ingredients. When mixed and warm it is ready to serve over noodles, biscuits, or bread.

Of course these recipes are not limited to the use of Thanksgiving Turkey Leftovers and the basics can be used for most white meats including Chicken.

How to Make Danish-Style Almond Glazed Rolls

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Shelly_Hill]Shelly Hill

If you like to bake Danish-Style Almond Glazed Rolls but...you want to do it in a more modern short-cut way, I think you will enjoy this recipe.

Instead of spending an hour making your own dough, you cut down the time by using crescent rolls. When it comes to applying the glaze, let the rolls cool down but yet still very warm, before you drizzle the glaze onto the rolls. This recipe will make 8 servings.

Danish Almond Glazed Rolls Recipe

Dough:

2 (8 ounce) cans crescent dinner rolls
1 egg white
1 teaspoon tap water
1/4 cup sliced almonds

Cream Cheese Filling:

6 ounce cream cheese, softened
1 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 cup confectioner's sugar
1/2 cup sliced almonds

Glaze Topping:

2/3 cup confectioner's sugar
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
4 teaspoons cold milk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a small bowl, cream together the cream cheese, almond extract and confectioner's sugar to make the cream cheese filling. Use an electric mixer and beat until filling is creamy and smooth. Hand stir in the chopped almonds and set aside.

Separate 1 can of crescent dinner rolls dough into 4 rectangles. Firmly press perforations to seal. Press or roll each to form a 7 x 4" rectangle. Spread each rectangle with about two tablespoons of the cream cheese filling to within 1/4" of the edges.

Starting at the longer side, roll up each rectangle, firmly pinching edges and ends to seal the dough. Gently stretch each roll to 10" in length. Coil each roll into a spiral with the seam on the inside, tucking the end underneath. Place on an ungreased baking sheet or a baking sheet lined with a silicone nonstick baking mat. Repeat with remaining can of dough and cream cheese filling.

In a medium bowl, combine the egg white and water, brush egg mixture over the rolls. Sprinkle the rolls with 1/4 cup of finely chopped almonds.

Bake in a 350 degree oven for 15-21 minutes or until they are golden brown.

In a small bowl, blend together all of the glaze ingredients, adding enough milk for desired drizzling consistency. Drizzle glaze over the warm rolls.

How to Make Great Potato Salad

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jennifer_Clark]Jennifer Clark

Do you have trouble making potato salad? If so, you can be sure there are simple steps to follow in making it for that hungry crowd. Many people don't have a family recipe, or they just make common mistakes along the way and get frustrated. It really isn't that hard to make potato salad. These tips should help get you well on your way to pleasing everyone!

Determine first how many people will be eating potato salad. Remember, most kids turn up their noses at the thought of anything mushy with potato lumps in it. But men usually heap it on next to their other favorites, so they will eat the portions the kids chose to pass up. Also, potato salad is filling. Many serving sizes are smaller than you think.

Take advantage of the "bags" of potatoes in the store where the potatoes are medium in size. Large potatoes take longer to cook, so they usually must be cut in half. The Idaho white potato provides a great flavor and cook well. Don't make the mistake of using red potatoes since they get too soft and turn mushy. Five potatoes will make salad for about 8 or 9 people. Then, just figure on half of a potato for each additional person over 9.

Next, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Tip.....Do NOT peel the potatoes. Just add them to the boiling water right out of the bag. Be sure to cut the big ones in half! Boil for about 20 minutes and when a knife sticks through them easily, they are done. Hold the warm potato under cool running water and the potato peeling just falls off! All the flavor of the potato will be in your potato salad.

While the potatoes cool, chop half of a large white onion. In a large bowl, mix the onion, about 1 cup of mayonnaise to start with (I use Miracle Whip), 1/2 cup of sweet pickle relish, 1 tsp. salt, and a little pepper. Then chop the potatoes as small as you want and throw them on top of the mixture. Mix well and add more mayonnaise as needed to reach the consistency that you like. I usually add more than the 1 cup before it's all done. You can also substitute with fat free products like yogurt, fat free sour cream, or low-fat mayonnaise.

Another ingredient I like to add is chopped, hard-boiled eggs. I use 3 eggs in a batch of potato salad feeding 8 or 9 people. Add the eggs last so they don't get too mushy. Stir it all together and cool before serving. Potato salad is even better if left in the refrigerator overnight before serving. If you are close on time, it's even ok to throw the bowl in the freezer for about 45 minutes to get it cold quick!

Potato salad is a "crowd pleaser". After you make potato salad following these simple steps, you will be able to adjust the recipe easily for your own taste. Using these easy tips, you won't make mistakes, like peeling away all of the flavor, overcooking the potatoes, or adding ingredients you don't need.

When I cook my potato salad, everyone wants my recipe! This recipe isn't even written down anywhere, until now. So, make this your recipe and enjoy!

Texas Thanksgiving Cornbread Dressing Recipe

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Shelley_Pogue]Shelley Pogue

Ingredients:

Pan of cornbread, usually 4 boxes of Jiffy Brand cornbread.
1 package of Jimmy Dean sausage cooked; hold the grease to mix with the rest of ingredients. If you want to be healthier remove it, but remember it is the Holidays.
1 pkg. of shelled Pecans
1 can chicken broth
4 celery stalks (use the hearts for tenderness, and best flavor)
1 medium sweet onion chopped
2 Apples chopped you can use whichever is your favorite
2Tablespoons poultry seasoning
2 Tablespoons of Rubbed Sage
1 Tablespoon of Fresh Rosemary, if you live in the Central Texas area it is plentiful. But you can find it at most grocery stores.
1 Tablespoons salt, or to taste
2 Tablespoons black pepper

Preparation:

Make your cornbread and remove it from the oven and let it cool. If you want to spice it up you can use the Jalapeño cornbread instead of the plain. If you like spicy this gives it an added kick, and it is very tasty! When you cornbread is cool enough to work with you will combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix until all ingredients are mixed together well. You will then add to a pan, or pans depending on the size to cook the dressing. You will preheat your oven to 350 degrees. The approximate cooking time will vary depending on your oven. I would check after about 30 minutes and then check every 10 after that. It should take no longer than an hour or so to be completely cooked. If it has some browning on the top of the dressing that is totally okay, you actually want it to brown some for texture. You can check after 30 minutes with a toothpick for doneness, and when it comes out with no batter on the toothpick, the dressing is done. I hope that you enjoy this dish, it is a favorite around my house during the Holidays. Enjoy!

Recipe:2 cups mashed cooked Pumpkin (or 16oz canned Pumpkin)InstructionsPreheat oven to 425°F. Whisk pumpkin, eggs, spices and

salt in medium bowl until smooth. Pour into crust. Bake

15 minutes.

3/4 cup of sugar

2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon

3/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves

3 eggs lightly beaten

1 cup of cream (or 1 can of condensed milk)

1 unbaked 9 inch pie shell

Reduce oven temperature to 350°F and continue baking

35 to 40 minutes or until knife inserted 1 inch from crust

comes out clean. Cool. Garnish as desired. Store leftovers

covered in refrigerator.

Sweet Potato Pie

Everybody loves sweet potato pie; Especially, the people in New Amsterdam.

Sweet potatoes were easy to grow and stored well through the winter months.

INGREDIENTS1 pound sweet potatoDIRECTIONSBoil sweet potato whole in skin for 40 to 50 minutes, or

until soft when poked with a fork. Run cold water over the

sweet potato, and peel the skin.

1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup butter, softened

1 cup white sugar

2 eggs

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1.25 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust

Cube sweet potato in a bowl. Add butter, and mix well with

mixer. Stir in sugar, milk, eggs, nutmeg, vanilla and

cinnamon. Beat on medium speed until mixture is smooth.

Pour filling into an unbaked pie crust.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 60 minutes, or until knife

inserted in center comes out clean. Pie will puff up like a

soufflé, and then will sink down as it cools.

Serve warm.

Shoofly Pie

Shoofly Pie is probably the most famous Dutch Pennsylvanian recipe.

Recipe:1.5 cups all-purpose flourInstructionsThoroughly stir together the flour, sugar, ¼ baking soda.

Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. In a separate

bowl, stir together molasses, hot water and ¼ teaspoon

baking soda. Pour 1/3 of the molasses mixture into the

pastry shell. Sprinkle with 1/3 of the flour mixture. Bake

at 375 for 45 minutes. Cool and serve.

.5 cup sugar

.25 teaspoon baking soda

.25 cup butter

.5 cup light molasses

.5 cup hot water

.25 teaspoon baking soda

1 unbaked 8-inch pie shell

Apple Pandowdy

Deep Dish Apple Pie was a favorite in the new world. As American as Apple Pie.

Traditionally the crust was broken up and stured in with the pie filling when served

Recipe:Pastry for 2 crust 9 inch pieInstructionsCore, peel and slice apples. Mix together the nutmeg,

cinnamon, molasses, sugar, salt and apple slices. Add 3

tablespoons of melted butter and 1/4 cup of water. Mix

well and let rest.

1/4 cup of butter

1/2 cup of sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/3 teaspoon ground nutmeg

12 sliced peeled apples

1/2 cup of molasses

1/4 cup of water

1 stick of butter

1/2 teaspoon of Salt

The pastry should be rolled out into a 12 x 12 sheet

brushed with butter and then folded in half and roll out

again. Brush with more butter and repeat folding and

rolling. Chill and let rest in refrigerator for 10 minutes.

This makes the pastry very crusty and flaky.

Place the apple mixture in a deep 10 inch pie dish that is

at least 2 inches deep. Place pastry over the top and tuck

in the edges between the mixture and the sides of the

dish. Bake at 425F for 10 minutes. Remove the pie and

cut the crust and mix in with the apples slightly. Return

pie to oven for 15 minutes more. Serve warm

Cook the Best Turkey Ever

by Brandy Keller

First, decide how many you are cooking for. Buy early enough so the bird can thaw.

1 aluminum disposable pan
1 Turkey
1 flavor injector optional
1 meat thermometer
1 cup margarine
2 cans chicken broth
3 Tablespoons chicken seasoning
1 teaspoon sage optional
1 teaspoon parsley optional

Get an aluminum disposable pan for cooking the turkey. Thaw the bird in the refrigerator for 3 days. Thoroughly wash the bird, inside and out. Remove the neck and the heart, liver and anything else in the turkey. Set in pan. Breast side down (Yes DOWN). Set aside

Melt margarine, shake chicken broth, open and pour into the margarine, add the chicken seasoning, the sage, and parsley if you are using them. Pour the melted margarine and the broth mixture.

Note: If you are going to use the flavor injector, make horizontal insertions, to prevent the juices from pouring out. (You will be turning the turkey over ½ hour before removal from oven. If injector, is used vertically the juice will run out.)

Cover the turkey with foil, making sure to leave a small place for a vent. Cook the turkey according to the directions on the wrapper, set alarm to go off at least 30 minutes before recommended cooking time.

NOTE: this is where you will need some help. Have someone come in and help turn turkey over. (DO THIS Slowly!! The turkey will be HOT! In addition, heavy. It will splash if it is let down to fast, so please BE CAREFUL when doing turning the bird over.) This is when I add the meat thermometer. Make sure when inserted it does NOT touch the bone and it is inserted into the thigh.

I inject the juice for the pan again this time from the top in a downward direction. Recover the turkey with the foil. Cook until the meat thermometer reads 180 degrees F. Remove the bird immediately to prevent over cooking. Let the bird sit for 30 minutes before carving.

Your turkey should have plenty of juice, it should have juice running out when cut and also be juicy the next day. Carve, Eat and enjoy!

Easy Thanksgiving Recipes

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Margaret_W]Margaret W

Break out the sweat pants! Once again, it's time to stuff our faces and expand our waistlines on this wonderful American holiday we call Thanksgiving Day. Although turkey and football are the stars on Thanksgiving, I enjoy the variety of delicious side dishes and deserts that for some reason are only made this time of year.

The one drawback to the "second fiddles" of turkey day is allotting enough time to make everyone's favorite dish. I try to make all my recipes as quick and easy as possible to cut down on the stress in the kitchen, while still providing a delicious meal. Here are a couple quick and easy Thanksgiving recipes that I hope you will try.

Baked Mashed Potatoes

What you need:

3 lbs (9 -10 medium) gold, yellow or russet potatoes, peeled
4 T butter
8 oz package cream cheese, softened
12 oz or 11/2 c sour cream
salt to taste
black pepper to taste

What you do:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Quarter potatoes and boil in salted water until fork tender but not mushy; drain. Place potatoes in a large bowl with 2 T of butter and mix with hand mixer until fairly smooth. Add sour cream, cream cheese, salt and pepper and mix until well blended.

Spray a large casserole dish with nonstick spray. Add potatoes and dot with remaining 2 T of butter. Bake for 30 minutes uncovered; serve.

Cranberry Sauce

What you need:

12 oz bag cranberries
1 c water
1 c sugar

What you do:

Add sugar and water to a med sized saucepan; heat to boiling. Add cranberries to pan and return to boil. Reduce heat to low and cook, covered, 5-8 minutes or until cranberries burst

1 c shelled pecans
3 large eggs

Sweet Potato Casserole

What you need:

4 c sweet potatoes, cooked and mashed
1/2 c brown sugar (divided in half)
2 eggs, beaten
